I’ll like to take a swipe at this before you take yours. In this context ‘Love at first sight’, is someone falling in love with another at first sight. Words don’t really have to be said, nothing really has to be known to fall in this love. A lot of people actually believe in this, and it has caused many problems.

Many married people that loved at first sight and quickly got married, will tell you that you need more than a first sight to truly know that you are in love. If there’s love at first sight, I believe there should be love at first touch, love at first sound, and love at first scent! We are having a lot of marriages being broken up today, and it is all because the foundation was faulty.

If I meet a lady today, that says to me today “Victory, I am in love with you!” I’ll end up rolling on the floor laughing. She hardly knows me, so how can she love me? She must simply love what she sees right now; at the moment, which would probably be my good looks, my voice and charisma. She doesn’t know me, who I am, my likes, dislikes, passion, vision, drive, the kind of person I love to be with, strengths, weaknesses, beliefs or my background! I see the word ‘love’ as too expensive in this context. Love is way more than a 4-letter word. Now it seems the word love has become more of a cliché.

I believe the reason why the word ‘love’ is being thrown around carelessly in this era, is because many people that claim to be in it only have short term views in their heads, and also the selfishness involved, as they see each relationship as one that will end soon. If I can say to a lady that I want to sleep with, that I love her, I would most likely get what’s in the cookie jar, faster than if I remained quite neutral about it.

Right now the word ‘LOVE’ has become a deception! Guess what? The new upcoming generation is taking up this same mentality; they simply have no understanding of what true love is. They watch movies that right after the man and woman say they love each other; they are both rolling under the sheets. You may not be concerned about this, but I am, because love isn’t being portrayed rightly. As a popular quote goes “When a lie has been in office for too long, it starts to look like the truth!” I don’t believe love should be based on perceptions alone. There is something called ‘knowledge by acquaintance’. Of course, it has probably happened before, that two people on sighting one another can have that connection; I don’t believe that connection is love.

The words ‘crush’, ‘infatuation’ and ‘lust’ have stopped being used generally today, simply because it’s now called love. I believe love is about being selfless, love is service, love is learnt, love should be grown in, love should be treasured, and love is life. Love is not a feeling, love is not an emotion, love is not lust and love is not wicked. Love is real, and love is true.

Love is very patient and kind, never jealous or envious, never boastful or proud, never haughty or selfish or rude. Love does not demand its own way. It is not irritable or touchy. It does not hold grudges and will hardly even notice when others do it wrong. It is never glad about injustice, but rejoices whenever truth wins out. If you love someone, you will be loyal to him no matter what the cost. You will always believe in him, always expect the best of him, and always stand your ground in defending him. 1 Cor 13:4-7 TLB

There’s still a lot more to say about love, but I’ll leave it here today… What are your thoughts? Is love at first sight truly real?

  1. At first sight?

If there’s anything, its a likeness! You can build ONLY friendship on that… You can never build a true relationship!

The problems are Disney movies and chick flicks and the projection of the “love” in the society today…. If a love movie does not end in kissing, an average youth isn’t okay with it!

Our orientation has to change! If it is too convenient, it is not love!

  2. I totally agree with you Vic.
Love at first sight isn’t love, it’s lust, and maybe likeness.
There must be an existence of “Knowledge by Acquaintance” before love-relationship can even surface.
How can I be in love with someone I don’t know his date of birth, nor his favorites, likes and dislikes.

We are in love with God because we are always growing in the knowledge of Him. He loves us first because He knows and understands us 100%!!!

  3. True love is based on personality, you fall in love with a persons character and when you see a person you don’t see their character so I’d say there’s no love at first sight but just lust at first site.

  5. Very true. Love doesn’t just happen. We grow love.
If there’s anything that happens at first sight, it’s ‘like’, lust or crush.
Sometimes the iss is we have this image of perfection in our heads and when someone shows up in the area looking like that image, we jump.
