It was one of those days that I had to drive to pick up something. I was going to a store not too far away. I knew my destination, and was driving at a moderate speed at that point in time. I then took a look at the rear view mirror, and I saw a car coming at full speed! I held my steering wheel well and kept moving forward. The car suddenly overtook me, and sped past me.

Somewhere in my mind, I was wondering “Why the hurry on such a road like this? Maybe he is going really far away”. As I watched his car move on ahead, I noticed the car turned into a house about 3 houses away from the point he overtook me. I asked myself “Are you kidding me? Did this man just speed past me to get to his house just a few metres away?” I then drove past his parked car outside the gate, waiting for someone to open up for him to go in.

I suddenly burst out laughing! Because it dawned on me, that a competition is useless, if the goals, direction, and destinations are are not the same. If he was driving past me to get to where I was going, I could have been pained. But he was just going a few metres away! I ended up driving past his car, because my destination was different. In fact we were never in a competition! This event just made me realize something different..

In life, many of us are busy comparing ourselves with others. We are all trying to get to different destinations at the same speed. Some people are called to go a 100 metres in life, some 50, others 1000! Can’t you see it? You are called to run a different race, a different destination, set apart for a different purpose!

Why compare yourself, with someone else whose purpose or goals you don’t know? I believe we can learn from each other, but we shouldn’t compare ourselves with each other! Someone said “You can’t judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree”. But this is exactly what many of us are doing with our lives, we are trying to live by other peoples standards, and other peoples ratings! What’s your rating of yourself? What were you born to do?

I am surprised that men and women want to be exactly like other men and women. They want to just copy them and become exactly what they are. Some people just want to become like their fathers, mothers, or mentors. They want to be a direct younger version of them! Have you ever asked yourself, “Who am I? Do I have something better to offer? Was I born to be someone else or be myself?”

People are now confused because they can’t recognize their uniqueness. I’m not saying don’t learn from people ahead of you, but don’t let them be your standard! You were not born to be them, you were born to be you!

Put on the search lights today, and begin to look inwards, shut the lights outside, and switch on the light inside. Stop sitting before the TV and the internet, watching other peoples lives and celebrating them. Have you taken time to watch yourself and celebrate yourself? There is much more you are made to offer, do not shortchange yourself like the man that gave his birthright for a meal of pottage. You can be who God made you to be when he sent you to earth.

There is no greater thing than knowing who created you, made you for a purpose, finding out that purpose, and fulfilling that purpose.

Learn from those who are ahead of you, be inspired to keep moving on by looking at those behind you. You may be in a race, but its not against me, it’s against yourself! Strive to become better, find your strengths and strengthen your weaknesses, don’t look at me, I’m just trying to find mine too. You may speed past me, but I’ll keep moving on, just ensuring that I stick to my path and reach my destination, be sure that’s what you are also doing!

“Your success in life is not based on your speed but in following the right route”

And most importantly, learn to walk the journey God has given you by His leading and inspiration. There is no point in living another persons life, that leads you down the wrong path and you end up hearing, ‘… Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. ‘ Make use of prayer as a means to connect to what God has to say about your life and destiny, and walk in alignment with that plan. Be unique, because in God’s plan, he created you differently.

“We don’t dare put ourselves in the same class with those who think they are so important. We don’t compare ourselves to them. They use themselves to measure themselves, and they judge themselves by what they themselves are. This shows that they know nothing”
2 Corinthians 10:12

  2. Nice and inspiring!!! Sometime most people use their mentor or someone they admire to set a standard of which God might just want you to learn something from them not make them your standard and this sometimes cause a limit to what God actually have in store for us.I pray God help us all.(Amen)
